How Do I Write A Membership Sales Letter?
If you want people to join your membership site, the best way to get them in is not with a fancy blog or informative website. It’s with a long form sales letter, a site that convinces them why they should join in your membership right this second. How is writing a sales letter for a membership site, especially a recurring membership site, different than running a sales letter for a regular product?
There are a few techniques I always like to use on a membership site that I don’t necessarily use anywhere else and I want to share them with you. Those are the payment plan drop, sling them on the instant gratification and the monthly breakdown of what’s coming each and every month.
What’s the payment plan drop? Here’s the way I view membership sites. If you’re running a fixed-term membership site which means that instead of an ongoing training, somebody pays you for say six months and then stops. You’re really offering them a payment plan. You’re really offering them a $1,000 course but you’re cutting it up into six easy monthly payments so they can pay as they go. You’re doing them a huge favor because it’s still a $1,000 course but they have a much easier time of getting in. you’re financing their journey towards success.
When I present the price, I tell them it’s not just a $1,000 cost. It’s not two payments of $500. It’s not four payments of $250. Instead it is six payments of $125. When you drop it like that, it seems a lot smaller and it seems still that they’re getting a lot of value for a small price. They’re getting the first access to a $1,000 training course but tonight they’re only going to put down about 10-12% of that.
The next thing that makes it easy to get someone in your membership site is sell them on the instant gratification. What are they going to get tonight as soon as they join? When somebody joins your membership site, they’re probably going to be the most excited the night they join because you convince them to get in. Recap exactly everything they get tonight within the next few minutes as soon as they have paid, as soon as they have logged in. That’s really helpful.
I’ve seen way too many sales letters that promise the beginnings of things too far down the line. One time I saw a copywriting membership site and they said in the sales letter, “You’ll be able to write your first sales letter at the end of month two in this course.” I was thinking to myself, “What? Why can’t you just teach me the basics as soon as I join and then the extra training is just extra?” When you’re selling your membership solution, give them something actionable, some kind of take away as soon as they join.
Finally, break down what they get every month. If you have a site that goes on for six months or a year, it can become very confusing exactly what’s in the site, exactly when do they get it and how long they have to wait to get it. To avoid that, break it down month per month what they get each and every month. That way, there’s no bait and switch confusion. That way, nobody buys for one particular bonus and then says, “Oh, you mean I’ve got to wait to a month six?” Just state upfront in the sales letter that they have to wait until month six and you can always play this to your advantage because you can say, “I want to teach you the basics upfront so that by month six when we get to these advanced strategies, you’ll be completely ready for this extra training.”
That’s how you write membership copy. Drop the payment plan because your fixed-term membership really is a financing offer. Sell them on what they get tonight on the instant gratification and break down what they get each and every month. That way, there’s no confusion when they join.

By being selective with the affiliate programs you choose, you can make residual income month after month. Some affiliate program directories allow you to search for programs that include recurring billing for membership sites.
But once you have done your research and selected a handful of residual income affiliate programs there is one lesser used strategy that can make a huge difference to your success level.
What is it?
Being different!
What do we mean, being different? Rather than going along with the crowd and using the same text links, banners, and advertising promotions everyone and their dog is using, create your own unique angle on the product you want to promote.
This means writing your own ad copy. Find an angle few other affiliates are promoting and make that your own.
Create your own graphics or banners if that is the medium you also like to use.
Think of ways and places where you are likely to find potential customers that have been overlooked by the masses. In other words, walk the path less trodden.
Here is an example: Suppose you want to promote the program mentioned at the end of this article. It allows you to make residual income from a membership site offering English lessons.
Where will you find your target audience? There is huge potential for this program given the millions of people around the world that want to learn English.
Writing articles and putting out ads in places you normally use for affiliate promotions many not work well in this instance. You need to get to where the eyeballs of other language speakers are looking.
This means stepping into the world of multi-lingual web pages. Actually it’s not that difficult. There are a number of free services on the net that can translate a web page into any target language you want.
Suppose you select some keywords, such as ‘learn English’, ‘English lessons’, ‘English course’, etc. Then write about 400 words about the English Online Workshop, the product being featured.
Use the Google translation tool or another of your choice. Copy the text and create a web page in that language. Remember to also translate the meta tags, title, description and keyword, and insert the translated text into your html header.
Simply add that page to your sitemap or find out if Google has a search engine for that language, and submit the URL directly to that search engine.
Suppose you did this for the Top 10 major language groups and created a variety of pages for each targeting different keywords. Do you think many affiliates will be taking this course?
I can tell you quite truthfully, not many will. Even potential affiliates reading this article will probably not take action.

Static Websites – Brochureware
Most small businesses start out with a small, “static” website.
In order for the business to update their static website, they will have to contact their website development company and request that the changes be made. It is for this reason that they are not updated very often and remain “static” for a long period of time.
A static website can, however, feed off dynamic content from other websites by syndicating content. Such content often includes the latest weather, news headlines, exchange rates, etc.
A static website mainly serves to provide a business with basic online presence.
Dynamic, Database-Driven Websites
Today, most successful websites are dynamic, meaning the content changes regularly without necessarily feeding content from other bigger websites (as in the case of many static websites). Dynamic websites are usually maintained by members of the business using a Content Management System – a web-based software application that allows them to update their content without having to learn anything about web programming.
Corporate Style Websites
This is the next step up from a static website, where the business can update the website content themselves without having to get hold of the web design company.

These kinds of websites have become more popular in recent years as the online shopping industry has grown quite considerably (Internationally, at least).
In South Africa, however, many businesses are hesitant to implement online transactions into their website strategy as it can be expensive to implement the necessary security measures. This often discourages businesses as they are uncertain on whether or not they will see significant returns.
An alternative to a Shopping Cart System is to implement a Quotation System. This means the visitor adds all the items they are interested in to a “quotation basket” and once done, they submit it to the company and are contacted by a sales
representative to complete the transaction.
Information Driven Websites
Eg. Website directories, article directories, a Short-Story/Poetry submission website, etc.
These websites mainly derive revenue from selling advertising space on their website.
The information is generated by people that visit the website and submit content – the website is self-generating and the content follows current trends and interests.
Although the owners of the website do not have to produce the focus-content, they do need to be able to control the type of content that is submitted – they need to implement measure that will prevent spammers from flooding their website with unwanted content. They also need people to moderate the content that is generated on the website.
Community Websites
Eg. Job Search Websites, Online Dating websites, Discussion Boards, Special-Interest Portals
These websites usually cater for certain types of Internet users. Their main source of revenue may be advertising or offering different levels of memberships with different benefits (e.g “Gold Membership”)
The website almost becomes type of social being in itself by interacting with the member on a very personal level. For example, after submitting a post to a discussion board, the website will email the member to inform them when they have received a reply. The website and the member, in a sense, form a virtual relationship.
The membership registration process is usually automated allowing the website owner to concentrate on selling advertising space and monitoring performance.
They do however need to moderate what members do on the website in the case of chat rooms and forums (eg. To stop users from swearing, advertising for free, promoting hate speech, etc)
